Stay in Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere or Bowness for the Fred Whitton Challenge on 9 May 2027. The 112-mile Lake District sportive starts and finishes at the Showfield in Grasmere, with riders off between 6am and 8am, so the closer your bed, the easier race morning: Ambleside is about 5 km away, Windermere and Bowness around 12 km.
Grasmere is the closest base: the start and finish are at the Showfield on Stock Lane, an easy walk from the village, but it is small and its rooms go first. Ambleside, about 5 km south on the A591, is a short ride or drive to the start. Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere, around 11 to 14 km away, have the widest choice of hotels and suit groups who want more places to eat and drink after the ride.
Glaramara in Borrowdale sits at the foot of Honister, one of the route's climbs, but it is on the far side of the fells from Grasmere and a much longer drive round by road than the map suggests, so it suits riders who want to stay out on the course.
Camping is not allowed on the Showfield and there are no campsites in Grasmere village, so plan a proper bed. With a 6am start and photo ID needed at registration, staying the Saturday night nearby takes the stress out of the morning, and the loop brings you back to the same place to finish.
Places are allocated by ballot: the general ballot opens on 1 December 2026 and closes on 10 December. Grasmere fills quickly for the race weekend, so book a room with free cancellation as soon as you enter the ballot, then confirm it once your place comes through. Saturday 8 May is the night to secure first.
