In short
Skiing in Jasná means Slovakia's biggest resort: 51 km of pistes on both sides of Mt Chopok, 19 lifts and cable cars, 1,061 m of vertical and 12 freeride zones. Cruise the north side's tree-lined runs, cross to the steeper, quieter south, and come in March for good snow with fewer crowds.
A 24-person Funitel, hung on two ropes so it holds steady in the wind, carries you up the north face of Chopok. At the top, the Rotunda restaurant sits at 2,004 m with a big terrace in the sun. From there the mountain falls away on both sides: wide runs through the trees to the north, steeper and more open ground to the south. Weighing up the Low Tatras against the Alps? The real question is which side of Chopok, and which month, suits the way you ski.
How big is Jasná and what makes it Slovakia's biggest resort?
Jasná Nízke Tatry is the largest ski resort in Slovakia, with 51 km of pistes across both sides of Mt Chopok. Chopok is the second highest peak of the Low Tatras, a range that runs for more than 80 km across central Slovakia. Tatry Mountain Resorts (TMR), the company that runs the resort, puts the top of the lifts at 2,004 m and the lowest point at 943 m. That is a vertical drop of 1,061 m, below a summit that stands at 2,024 m.
Those 51 km are spread over 39 pistes, and the split tells you more than the total. Here is how the resort's own slope figures break down by colour.
| Colour | Pistes | Total length |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | 19 | 24,785 m |
| Red | 14 | 18,350 m |
| Black | 6 | 7,985 m |
| All pistes | 39 | 51,120 m |
Nearly half the mileage is blue, about a third is red, and the black runs add up to less than 8 km. Nineteen lifts move up to 31,635 skiers an hour: six lifts, eight chairlifts and five cable cars. A fully automatic snowmaking system with 639 snow points covers 43 km of piste, and 18 PistenBully machines and one Prinoth groom it.
Size is where Jasná leads. On Slovakia.travel's list of ski resorts, Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras has 9 km of easy to moderate runs. Tatranská Lomnica claims the highest and steepest piste in the country, Lomnické sedlo, which starts at 2,190 m with 1,300 m of vertical. Lomnica wins the single big descent. Jasná wins the week, because there is so much more of it to ski.
When is the best time to ski Jasná?
Ski Jasná in March for good snow and room to move. January and February bring the best snow of the season, and the crowds that come with it. The season usually runs early December to the end of April, and TMR says its snowmaking guarantees snow for at least five months a year.
- December: the season opens and cover can be patchy early on, improving through the month. Christmas and New Year bring the busiest slopes of the winter.
- January and February: peak season, with the best snow. When Jasná hosts the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, race weekends draw big crowds, and the Freeride World Tour Qualifier comes every February.
- March: the sweet spot. Chopok's altitude keeps good late-season snow, and there are fewer people on the runs.
- April: still quiet, but the lower slopes can turn soft and lean on snowmaking, while the north-facing runs above the mid-station hold their cover longest.
theKlub's climate table for Jasná shows the average daily high and low for each month, and the number of days with rain or snow, from Open-Meteo data for 2016 to 2025.
| Month | High | Low | Rain or snow days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | -6.3 °C | -12.3 °C | 14.0 |
| February | -3.9 °C | -10.6 °C | 13.6 |
| March | -0.3 °C | -8.5 °C | 11.1 |
| April | 4.7 °C | -4.4 °C | 14.0 |
| May | 8.8 °C | -0.2 °C | 18.7 |
| June | 14.3 °C | 5.3 °C | 17.2 |
| July | 15.1 °C | 6.4 °C | 17.7 |
| August | 15.7 °C | 6.7 °C | 15.3 |
| September | 11.0 °C | 3.0 °C | 12.9 |
| October | 5.3 °C | -1.7 °C | 11.6 |
| November | -0.4 °C | -6.1 °C | 12.0 |
| December | -4.7 °C | -10.2 °C | 13.5 |
Read it as a ski calendar. January averages a high of minus 6.3 °C and a low of minus 12.3 °C, so pack proper layers for the chairlifts. By March the average high is minus 0.3 °C. In April it climbs to 4.7 °C, which is why the lower runs soften late in the season. The higher north-facing slopes keep their snow.
In a peak week, Fresh Track is the way to beat the crowds. You ski groomed, empty pistes before the lifts officially open, and a hearty breakfast at the Rotunda comes with it.
Is Jasná good for beginners and intermediate skiers?
Jasná is good for intermediates and workable for beginners, as long as first-timers know where to start. The resort has a dedicated beginner area at Biela Púť, a fenced Maxiland ski nursery for children, and 19 of its 39 pistes are blue. The catch is on the north side. Many of its blue runs are narrow, crowded and often icy, and stronger skiers use them as their way back down to the base. Beginners do best on the lower slopes with a ski school, and should not expect a gentle cruise across the whole north face. Intermediates get the better deal: 14 red runs that add up to 18,350 m, wide tree-lined pistes on the north face, and quieter slopes on Chopok's south side, reached by the cable cars that link the two faces. A group of mixed ability works well here, with the stronger skiers on the reds and everyone meeting for lunch at a lower station.
For families, the resort marks out where small children should start. That means the Brhliská and Otupné lifts, the Lúčky, Grand Jet and Biela Púť cable cars, and the Maxiland areas at Biela Púť, Lúčky and Krupová. Lessons run through the Tatry Motion ski school and the Maxiland ski kindergarten. SKI JASNA, another ski and snowboard school in Jasná, meets at piste 13 on Biela Púť.
Rent on site from Tatry Motion or bring your own. Boot fitting is available, and the resort's ski service tunes skis and boards while you wait. If you already own boots that fit, pack them: icy blues are easier in a boot you trust.
Head south for the quieter reds
Intermediates who want space should cross the mountain. TMR describes Chopok south as the side for freeriders and for skiers who prefer quieter slopes. It usually has so much natural snow that it needs little snowmaking. The A6 cable car from Biela Púť to Priehyba takes 4 minutes, and the resort says it gets you to the top of Chopok in 11. The crossing costs little of your morning.
Where does the advanced terrain and freeride skiing happen?
The advanced skiing happens on Chopok's south face and in Jasná's 12 freeride zones. The south side has the steeper, more open, ungroomed terrain. On piste, the six black runs total just 7,985 m. Strong skiers come to Jasná for what lies between the pistes, not for the blacks.
The freeride zones are open terrain left ungroomed. Treat them as you would any off-piste: ski them with a guide or in a lesson, and carry the avalanche kit you would carry anywhere else. SKI JASNA runs freeride and ski touring lessons when the snow allows. Every February the Freeride World Tour Qualifier brings top freeriders to these slopes.
Park riders get a snow park at Otupné on Chopok north and a Fun Zone, and a new ski cross course at Brhliská lets you try slalom and giant slalom for yourself.
Which side you sleep on matters less than when you cross. The Twinliner joins north and south, and 15-person gondolas climb from Krupová to Kosodrevina and on to the summit. The cable cars between the two sides meet at the Rotunda on top. They keep strict hours, so plan the afternoon around them.
What is the atmosphere like: World Cup racing and night skiing?
Jasná has the buzz of a race venue. It hosts the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, with women's giant slalom and slalom in recent years. When the women's World Cup returned to Jasná on 20 and 21 January 2024, after three years away, Mikaela Shiffrin won her record-extending 58th World Cup slalom on these slopes. The women's World Cup also races on the Olympia delle Tofane, in our guide to skiing Cortina d'Ampezzo.
The north side keeps going after dark. Two floodlit pistes on Chopok north, Biela Púť and Grand Jet, give 4.3 km of night skiing. The resort says it is lighting piste no. 10, Chaletová from Brhliská, adding a 2.7 km run. It bills that as the longest floodlit night skiing piste in Central Europe outside the Alps.
Après in Jasná gathers at the lower cable car stations, where the bars are. The Happy End Disco and Restaurant at Biela Púť is known for evening entertainment and live concerts. On freezing nights you can ride a cable car to dinner at the Rotunda on top of Chopok. For a rest day, a direct bus runs to the Tatralandia thermal water park in about 20 minutes. TMR's own hotels include ski passes and water park tickets with a stay.
