In short
For ski weekends in Italy, fly to Turin. Bardonecchia is an hour from the airport, Pila's gondola in Aosta 1 hour 15 minutes, Sestriere and Courmayeur 1 hour 30 minutes and Cervinia 1 hour 45 minutes. From Venice airport, a daily coach reaches Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2 hours 10 minutes. Bormio is too far for two days.
A ski weekend in Italy is won or lost in the transfer. Land on a Friday, and the right resort has you unpacked by dinner and queuing for the first lift on Saturday. The wrong one spends half a day each way on the motorway, and the two days you flew out for shrink to one and a half. The gap comes down to geography: Turin sits right against the western Alps, Venice sends a coach straight up into the Dolomites, and some of the best-known names on the map are a long valley drive from any runway.
Where to stay
Ski hotels in Italy
Hotels we picked for the sport: the right location, and the facilities an active stay needs.
Which Italian ski resorts are closest to an airport?
Turin Caselle is the airport that puts Italian snow closest to the arrivals hall. Bardonecchia is 1 hour from Turin airport by road and has direct trains from Turin. Pila is 1 hour 15 minutes by road to the gondola base in Aosta, then 18 minutes up by gondola. Sestriere and Courmayeur each take about 1 hour 30 minutes from Turin, and Cervinia about 1 hour 45 minutes; Courmayeur is also 115 km from Geneva airport. Milan Malpensa works for Cervinia, at about 2 hours, but it is the wrong airport for the Via Lattea, where Sestriere sits. In the east, Venice airport has a daily coach to Cortina d'Ampezzo that takes 2 hours 10 minutes on its quicker runs. Madonna di Campiglio is 165 km from Verona airport, and Bormio in Alta Valtellina needs a train to Tirano, about 2.5 hours from Milan Central, then a bus. For a two-day trip, the first six win.
Fly to Turin and ski the same afternoon
A morning landing in Turin leaves time for an afternoon on the snow in Bardonecchia or Sestriere, because both sit up the same Susa valley within 1 hour 30 minutes of the airport.
How fast can you reach Bardonecchia without a car?
Bardonecchia is 1 hour from Turin Caselle airport by road and 2 hours from Milan Linate or Malpensa. Cavourese Autolinee runs a coach from Turin airport to the resort, booked in advance. The town also has an international railway station where TGV trains stop, with direct trains to Bardonecchia from Turin in 1 hour and from Milan in 2 hours, so a group can land, ride the train up from the city and skip the hire car. By car it is 50 minutes from Turin on the A32 motorway. Bardonecchia suits friends who want the shortest journey of all and a resort they can reach by train.
Is Sestriere worth the extra half hour?
For altitude, yes. Sestriere is 1 hour 30 minutes from Turin Caselle, down the Susa valley on the A32 motorway and then up a wide, sweeping climb from Oulx. The village was built for skiing and sits at 2,035 m, and higher terrain holds its snow better once lower slopes soften. It belongs to the Via Lattea, the Milky Way, a sprawling ski area that links several Italian villages with Montgenèvre across the French border. Fly to Turin for it, not Milan: from Malpensa the transfer costs you hours of the weekend. Sestriere suits skiers who want height and a big linked area more than village charm.
Which Aosta Valley resort suits your weekend?
Pila is the easiest without a car, Courmayeur gives the widest choice of airports, and Cervinia has the longest season and the Matterhorn above the pistes. All three sit off the A5 motorway that runs from Turin up the Aosta Valley.
Can you reach Pila's slopes without a car?
Almost. A gondola leaves from the city of Aosta and reaches Pila, at 1,800 m among fir and larch woods, in 18 minutes, and Aosta railway station is a short walk from the cable car. Above the village, the Pila-Couis-Stella cableway climbs to 2,723 m in 15 minutes, and the area has 70 km of slopes, a snowpark and a fun park for children.
Aosta has direct trains to Turin Porta Nuova and Porta Susa, more than 20 a day, in under 2 hours, though buses replace trains between Ivrea and Aosta until 13 December 2026. By road, the gondola base is 1 hour 15 minutes from Turin airport. Pila suits families and friends happy to sleep in Aosta on the valley floor and ride up to the snow each morning.
Courmayeur or Cervinia: which earns the longer drive?
Courmayeur is 150 km from Turin airport, about 1 hour 30 minutes, and 115 km from Geneva, so a group flying from different UK airports can still meet there. Milan Malpensa is 212 km out, about 2 hours 15 minutes, and longer on a busy Saturday. On peak holiday weekends, traffic for the Mont Blanc Tunnel queues on the road just past the resort. Auberge de La Maison, a five-star hotel in Courmayeur, holds a 9.8 guest rating from 234 reviews.
Cervinia sits at 2,050 m under the Matterhorn, 1 hour 45 minutes from Turin and about 2 hours from Malpensa, one of the few Aosta Valley resorts where flying into Milan costs little extra time. Its lifts run daily from October to May, and its pistes link to Valtournenche and to Zermatt in Switzerland. The last climb up the valley is exposed to winter storms. Without a car, take the train to Châtillon/Saint-Vincent and the bus up. Our page on how to ski in Cervinia has its hotels and season.

Can you ski Cortina d'Ampezzo in a weekend?
Yes, if you fly into Venice and let the coach do the driving. Cortina Express and Dolomiti Bus coaches run every day this winter from the tourist bus park at Venice airport, leaving at 07:00, 11:20, 14:20, 17:20 and 19:00. The 17:20 reaches Piazzale Revis in Cortina at 19:30, so a Friday afternoon flight still makes dinner in the mountains. Going home, the 14:30 and 16:30 from Cortina reach Venice airport at 17:00 and 18:45, which leaves Sunday morning on the snow. Cortina has around 120 km of pistes in the Dolomiti Superski area, a top point of 2,828 m and gentle runs around Socrepes. It suits couples and friends who want a famous resort and a timetable to plan around. Our page to ski in Cortina d'Ampezzo lists its hotels, and the Cortina d'Ampezzo guide to runs and lifts plans the two days.
Where does the transfer eat the weekend?
Bormio is the clearest case: a big resort a long way from any runway. The nearest airports are Bergamo and Milan, and the nearest station is Tirano, about 2.5 hours by train from Milan Central, with a bus on to Bormio. Add the trip from the airport into Milan and both Friday night and Sunday afternoon go on travel. Save the Stelvio for a week, and the Bormio guide to the Stelvio and Cima Bianca has that plan.
Madonna di Campiglio sits in between: 165 km from Verona airport, 175 km from Bergamo and 125 km from Brescia. The Flyski Shuttle runs every Saturday and Sunday from 19 December 2026 to 21 March 2027 from Verona, Bergamo and Linate airports to the ski area, so a Saturday-to-Sunday trip works without a car, though at that distance a third day pays. Hotel Garnì Caminetto, Maribel Hotel and Hotel Chalet Del Brenta in Madonna di Campiglio hold guest ratings of 9.4 to 9.6.
Book the flights and the bed before the snow
Book the flights first, because they decide the resort. Turin's winter flights bunch on Saturdays and Sundays, many of them charters for UK package companies, and a cancelled Sunday evening flight there can leave you days from the next direct seat home. Milan Malpensa has far more flights, including an easyJet base serving almost every regional UK airport, and the wider safety net that comes with them. Then book the bed close to the lift, or in Pila's case the gondola, since a weekend has no time to spare on a morning shuttle.
The table lists the ski hotels with the highest guest ratings in theKlub's Italian catalogue. Several sit in towns this guide does not cover, so match the town to your airport before you book.
| Hotel | Town | Guest rating |
|---|---|---|
| Auberge de La Maison | Courmayeur | 9.8 / 10 |
| Tenne Lodges | Racines | 9.8 / 10 |
| The Laurin Small & Charming | Bolzano | 9.7 / 10 |
| Hotel Garnì Caminetto | Madonna di Campiglio | 9.6 / 10 |
| Lefay Resort & SPA Dolomiti | Pinzolo | 9.6 / 10 |
| SomVita Suites | Tirolo | 9.6 / 10 |
| Hotel Panoramic Lotsch | Sarntal | 9.5 / 10 |

Frequently asked questions
What is the best month for a ski weekend in Italy?
January, once the holiday peak has passed, gives quieter slopes and snow kept firm by the cold, though the days are short. March brings longer days, more sunshine and easing crowds. February has the broadest lift operation, but school holidays fill the slopes and the lunch spots, and Christmas and New Year are busy too.
Should you rent skis or fly with your own for a weekend?
Renting keeps a two-day trip light. Italian resorts reached by train rent equipment on site, and Cervinia has rental shops in the village and at Plan Maison on the mountain, so you can collect skis on the way to the first lift. Skiers with boots fitted to their feet are better off bringing their own boots.
Can you ski from Cervinia into Zermatt on a weekend trip?
Yes, when the lifts and the weather allow. You need an international pass covering both the Italian and Swiss pistes, and a passport or photo ID. Wind, cloud or storms close the high crossing lifts first, so plan the return around the last connecting lifts: missing them means a long road trip round the valleys.
Can you reach Cortina d'Ampezzo by train?
Partly. A fast regional train runs from Belluno to Calalzo di Cadore without a change, then a bus covers the last stretch from the station to Cortina, because the railway stops short of the resort. From Venice airport the direct coach is simpler, reaching Cortina in 2 hours 10 minutes on its quicker runs.
Two days in the Italian Alps reward a short transfer more than a famous name. Choose the airport first and the resort closest to it second, and you buy back an evening at each end of the weekend. Before anything else, find the Sunday evening flight home from Turin, Milan or Venice, then book the bed nearest the lift.
