In short

The skiing Bormio offers is long and steep: 50 km of slopes on one mountain, lifts to 3,017 m on Cima Bianca and 1,817 m of vertical down to the town. Strong skiers get the Stelvio World Cup downhill and the freeride below Bormio 3000; beginners learn up at Bormio 2000, 1,945 m.

Stand outside the top station on Cima Bianca, 3,017 m up in the Stelvio National Park, and Bormio is a scatter of rooftops far below in the valley. You can ski all the way down to it in a single run of 8.5 km. The last stretch is the Stelvio, where the world's fastest downhillers race each December and where the men's alpine events of the 2026 Winter Olympics were held. That descent is the reason to come. The rest of the week is about finding the runs, the lessons or the powder that fit your level.

What is the skiing like in Bormio?

Big and steep, with red runs the largest share, on one mountain that runs from Cima Bianca back down to the town.

Bormio's ski area is one mountain with a lot of vertical: 50 km of slopes and 1,817 m of descent between Cima Bianca at 3,017 m and the town. Bormio Ski, the company that runs the lifts, calls it the greatest skiable vertical drop in Italy. Its slope map counts 30 runs: 10 blue (easy), 13 red (intermediate) and 7 black (difficult), served by 12 lifts. A gondola climbs from town to Bormio 2000 at 1,945 m, the mid-mountain station with the beginner area, bars, restaurants and a ski depot. From there a cable car carries on to Cima Bianca, where the Valbella-3000 chairlift also tops out. With reds the largest group, Bormio suits confident intermediates and strong skiers best, while first-timers learn on gentle slopes at Bormio 2000. The signature is the summit-to-base run: 8.5 km and 1,817 m of descent from Bormio 3000 to the cableway in town.

The route, as Bormio Ski lays it out, leaves the top of the Valbella-3000 chairlift along the crest towards Cimino. It drops through Conca Valbella, the S. Ambrogio slope and Praimont, then takes the Canalino Fontanalonga into the Carcentina, the famous diagonal on the Stelvio. It crosses Bosco Basso and finishes back on the Stelvio at the cableway. Ride the gondola straight back up and go again. The whole area sits inside the Stelvio National Park.

Can you ski the Stelvio, Bormio's World Cup downhill?

Yes. The Stelvio is an open piste in the public ski area, and the summit-to-base run finishes on it. Its four sections are on Bormio Ski's run list: A1 and A4 graded red, A2 and A3 black.

As a race course it is 3,250 m long with 1,010 m of vertical, from a start at 2,255 m to a finish at 1,245 m, and the Bormio tourist board puts its gradients at over 50 per cent in places. It has been a fixture of the men's Alpine Ski World Cup since 1993. For the 2026/27 season the race programme has official downhill training runs on 26 and 27 December, the men's downhill on 28 December and the super-G on 29 December 2026.

The skier most tied to it is Dominik Paris, who holds the record here with five downhill wins and a super-G. Bormio made him an honorary citizen in 2022, and Bormio Ski dedicated cabin number 1 of its lifts to him. The Stelvio was also chosen for all the men's alpine races of the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The women's races were on the Olympia delle Tofane, in our guide to skiing Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Who should ski it? Anyone at home on black runs. If reds are your limit, the Stelvio's red sections give you a taste, A1 near the top and A4 into town, and race week lets you watch the professionals take the black middle at full speed.

Is Bormio good for beginners and families?

Yes, and the learning terrain sits up the mountain at Bormio 2000, not in town.

A few steps from the top of the gondola, at 1,945 m, is a wide beginner area renovated for the 2024/2025 winter. The slope is very gentle, with two magic carpets (conveyor belts you stand on), Marmotta and Gipeto, and two short drag lifts, Scoiattoli 1 and 2, which pull you up on your skis. At its foot is PlayWood, a snow playground of little wooden houses, slides and swings where parents can sit and watch. A second, smaller learning area at Ciuk, 1,636 m, can be reached by car and has the Lepre Bianca carpet and a bar and restaurant close by.

The town has seven ski schools and more than 100 ski and snowboard instructors, teaching private and group lessons in Italian, English, German, French and Russian, with special lessons for people with disabilities. The schools take hundreds of bookings a day in season, so book your ski lessons online before you travel.

Children who outgrow the carpets have two kids play parks and the Valbella funslope, a slope built for play, and park riders have The Jungle snowpark between La Rocca and Bormio 2000, with jib lines, snow waves and kickers of different sizes. For a family with mixed levels, Bormio 2000 works as a meeting point: lessons below, longer runs above, lunch together in between.

Where can strong skiers go off-piste in Bormio?

In two freeride zones that Bormio Ski names: the Vallone, below Bormio 3000, and the Skiers' Spot, in the woods between 2,700 m and 2,000 m. Bormio Ski's freeride page describes the lines.

  • La Classica, Vallone. Take the cable car to Bormio 3000, pass below the station and drop in. After halfway keep away from the left, where there are rock bands, and finish with a five-minute walk back to the pistes.
  • La Croce, Vallone. Follow the western ridge to the Vallecetta summit and ski its north-east facing couloir into La Classica.
  • Sciatori, Skiers' Spot. Enter on the right of the S. Ambrogio slope for a tree run, then follow the Strada dell'Acqua, a narrow dirt road, for about 20 minutes back to the slope at 2,000 m.
  • Antenne, Skiers' Spot. Experts only, with avalanche danger: Bormio Ski advises going with a mountain guide.

These zones are off-piste, so you ski them at your own risk. Never go alone, check the avalanche bulletin first, and carry a beacon, probe, shovel and backpack. There is a beacon checkpoint at Bormio 2000 to test yours on the way up, and you must rejoin the pistes only on the marked trail. If you have never skied the zones before, go with a mountain guide, as the lift company advises.

When is the best time to go skiing in Bormio?

January and February, for the most consistent snow; early December and late March, for quieter slopes.

The 2026/27 season runs from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 in Bormio and Santa Caterina. Cima Piazzi-San Colombano opens from 19 December 2026 to 4 April 2027. Midwinter brings the steadiest snowfall and the biggest crowds at weekends and holidays, so start early on those days. The shoulders suit skiers who want space: early December is quieter, and late March is warmer, though the snow can be less reliable. Race week, 26 to 29 December, brings the World Cup to the Stelvio.

The table below is theKlub's climate data for Bormio town, averaged over 2016 to 2025. It gives the average daily high and low for each month, and the days with 1 mm or more of rain or snow. It describes the valley, not the snow on the slopes above.

In town, January averages a high of 0.4°C and a low of minus 7.8°C, February has the fewest days of rain or snow of the winter, 9.3, and March highs reach 5.2°C. Higher up the mountain, expect it colder.

Book your pass, train and gear before you go

Sort three things before you travel: your lift pass, your train and your helmet. The Bormio Skipass covers three ski areas and 110 km of slopes: Bormio (12 lifts, 50 km), Santa Caterina (8 lifts, 35 km) and Cima Piazzi-San Colombano (10 lifts, 25 km), the family-sized one. A ski bus links them, free for pass holders. Prices for 4-hour, day and multi-day passes change from day to day, so buy online as soon as your dates are fixed. You also skip the ticket office queue. Once the pass is sorted, compare stays on our ski in Bormio page.

Without a car, take the train. The nearest station is Tirano, about 2 hours 30 minutes from Milano Centrale on Trenord's regional trains, and from Tirano buses run by Automobilistica Perego go on to Bormio, as the Bormio tourist board sets out.

Italy now requires every skier on the pistes to wear a helmet. Bormio Ski warns of fines and, for repeat offences, a cancelled ski pass. The Rossignol Pro Shop Bormio Pro Rent by the bottom station of the cableway rents skis and snowboards with the helmet included. If you ski in your own boots or on skis tuned to how you ski, bring them. The Bormio 2000 depot has heated, ventilated lockers for your own gear too, opened with your ski pass.

Frequently asked questions

Can you ski Livigno on a Bormio lift pass?

Not on the Bormio Skipass, which covers Bormio, Santa Caterina and Cima Piazzi-San Colombano. To add Livigno, buy the Alta Valtellina Skipass, valid in all four ski areas. For a road trip across the region, the Ski'n Lombardia pass covers 27 ski resorts in Lombardy.

Is a helmet compulsory when skiing in Bormio?

Yes. Italy now requires a helmet for everyone skiing, snowboarding or telemarking on groomed slopes and in authorised ski areas, sledging included. Bormio Ski warns that skiers without one can be fined, and repeat offenders can lose their ski pass. Skis and snowboards hired at the Rossignol shop by the cableway come with one.

What is the longest run in Bormio?

The summit-to-base run from Bormio 3000 to the town: 8.5 km with 1,817 m of vertical. It starts at the top of the Valbella-3000 chairlift, runs through Conca Valbella, S. Ambrogio and Praimont, joins the Stelvio at the Carcentina diagonal and finishes at the cableway in town.

Can you ski in Bormio in summer?

Not on the Bormio slopes, which open from 4 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. For summer skiing, the Bormio tourist board points to the Stelvio Glacier, where Bormio's ski instructors also ski through the summer.

What is there to do after skiing in Bormio?

Soak in hot water. Bormio has three thermal spas, and the tourist board lists opening times for QC Terme Bormio and Bormio Terme, so a session after the last run is easy to plan. The tourist board also keeps a list of local restaurants for the evening.

Bormio rewards a skier who plans a little. Learn or warm up at Bormio 2000, save the long run for a clear morning, give the Stelvio the respect it asks for, and keep a guide's number for a powder day. For stays and dates, start from theKlub's page to ski in Bormio, or browse all our ski holidays with theKlub. Fix your dates first, then buy your Bormio Skipass online that same week.
