In short
Skiing Baqueira-Beret means 173 km of marked pistes in four areas at the head of the Val d'Aran, between 1,500 m and 2,610 m. Beret suits beginners and families, Baqueira and Bonaigua hold the long reds and blacks, and Baciver is the experts' corner. The 2026-2027 season is expected to run from 28 November to 4 April.
The Val d'Aran is the one valley in the Spanish Pyrenees that turns its back on Spain. It faces north, towards France, so Atlantic weather reaches it first. Last winter that weather dropped 944 cm of snow at 2,500 m. Stone and slate villages line the valley floor. Above them, Baqueira-Beret spreads across four areas. A family on the Beret plateau and a freerider in Baciver can ski all day and meet only for dinner.
Why is Baqueira-Beret the Pyrenees' big ski area?
Baqueira-Beret is the largest ski resort in Spain, set at the head of the Val d'Aran near Vielha in the Lleida Pyrenees, with terrain reaching into the neighbouring Valls d'Àneu. Most of its slopes face the Atlantic side of the range, which brings big, reliable snowfalls. The ski area covers 2,273 hectares and 1,110 m of vertical, starting at Baqueira 1500 and topping out at 2,610 m on Cap de Baciver. Its 173 km of marked pistes are spread over 131 runs: 6 green, 48 blue, 55 red and 18 black, served by 36 lifts. Snowmaking from 874 cannons covers 98 km of piste, a useful back-up in the first weeks of the season. The terrain divides into four areas, Baqueira, Beret, Bonaigua and Baciver, each with its own character. The first lift went up at Baqueira in 1964, and the network has grown ever since.
The figures come from the technical sheet on Infonieve, the Spanish snow website. Keep theKlub's Baqueira-Beret ski page open as you plan the trip. For a second ski area in the Spanish Pyrenees, further west along the range, read our guide to skiing Formigal.
Which Baqueira-Beret area suits your level?
Beginners and families belong on Beret. Intermediates will spend most days between Baqueira and Bonaigua, and experts head for Baqueira's blacks and the Baciver reds. Runs are graded by colour: green and blue are the gentle groomed pistes, red is steeper and black is the steepest.
Baqueira: the original area
Baqueira is the busiest area because it is the easiest to reach. The gondola climbs from the base to the Bosque plateau at 1,800 m, where the nursery slopes sit. Above, wide blues and reds fan out. The Mirador red looks across the Naut Aran valley, and the blue Cara Nord carries you down to Orri. Experts come for Luis Arias, Pales der Arias and Tubo Nere, and for Passarells, the newest black and probably the hardest on the map. Escornacrabes is the off-piste classic; its name means the place where the goats die.
Beret: room to learn
Beret is the laid-back family area, spread across the open Pla de Beret. It has 37 pistes over 70 km, 20 of them blue and 12 red, with areas set aside for teaching. The blue Dera Reina winds through larch forest and meadows. Confident intermediates can ride the Costarjas drag, a lift that pulls you uphill on your skis, to Tuc de Costarjas at 2,338 m. From the edge of the resort, quiet reds and blues lead back to the Beret bowl.
Bonaigua: long legs required
Bonaigua is the area for long descents, with 27 runs over more than 38 km, 8 of them black. Ride the long Bonaigua blue or its red Cresta all the way down. A beginners' area sits at the Port de la Bonaigua, 2,072 m, where the Atlantic and Mediterranean watersheds part. Refugi San Miguel, a wooden lodge just above the base, serves Aranese stew.
Baciver: the high corner
Baciver is the smallest and highest area: 6 reds totalling 8.5 km, reaching 2,610 m, on terrain that was once for ski mountaineers only. Eth Coret red drops from there, with the walls of the Cara Nord in view.
Last winter Baqueira took 45.1% of skier visits, Beret 35.6%, Bonaigua 17.6% and Baciver 1.7%, according to the resort's review of the 2025-2026 season. Read that as a crowd map: Bonaigua and Baciver shared about a fifth of the skiers. A mixed group can split up after breakfast and meet at Orri, where the Cara Nord from Baqueira crosses into the Beret area.
When is the best time to ski Baqueira-Beret?
Ski Baqueira-Beret between December and April. The 2026-2027 season is expected to open on Saturday 28 November 2026, a date not yet confirmed. It should close on Sunday 4 April 2027, snow permitting.
The table below is theKlub's climate record for Baqueira-Beret, taken at the destination's centre point in the valley. It gives average daily highs and lows, and the days with 1 mm or more of rain or snow, over 2016 to 2025. It describes the weather in the valley, not the snow on the slopes.
| Month | High | Low | Rain or snow days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 3.4 °C | -4.0 °C | 13.3 |
| February | 5.3 °C | -2.5 °C | 11.3 |
| March | 5.6 °C | -1.7 °C | 15.8 |
| April | 8.0 °C | 0.6 °C | 14.6 |
| May | 12.2 °C | 3.7 °C | 17.0 |
| June | 18.8 °C | 9.2 °C | 16.9 |
| July | 22.1 °C | 12.0 °C | 14.1 |
| August | 22.3 °C | 12.1 °C | 14.3 |
| September | 17.6 °C | 8.2 °C | 13.3 |
| October | 14.3 °C | 5.4 °C | 12.2 |
| November | 7.1 °C | -0.3 °C | 14.3 |
| December | 5.5 °C | -1.8 °C | 12.3 |
January is the coldest month on the table, 3.4 °C by day and minus 4.0 °C at night, and February has the fewest days of rain or snow. For the mountain itself, last winter is the better guide. The resort opened for 129 days, with 702 cm of snowfall at 1,800 m and 944 cm at 2,500 m. Only two days closed completely: 12 February for a Civil Protection alert and 28 March for wind.
January brings the Freeride World Tour, the international big mountain competition, and early February the Marxa Beret cross-country race. Both weeks bring a crowd and a buzz. For more room on the pistes, early December and late March are the quieter windows, often with good conditions.
Ride the freeride terrain with the bulletin in your pocket
Baqueira-Beret's off-piste is serious mountain terrain, so ski it with a qualified guide and read the avalanche bulletin before you leave the piste. The benchmark is Tuc de Bacivèr, where the Freeride World Tour opened its 2026 season on 15 January. The face stands 2,644 m high and drops 430 m at an average 42°, through rock drops and steep pitches. Aymar Navarro, the first Spaniard to compete on the Tour, has strong ties to the valley and coordinates the Spanish national freeride team. Beyond the lifts, heliskiing reaches around 400 km² of Pyrenean terrain.
The Val d'Aran runs its own avalanche forecasting service, the Centre de Lauegi d'Aran, set up by the Conselh Generau d'Aran, the valley's government. Its daily bulletin comes out at 8 am, mapping the snowpack by slope aspect and altitude. Lauegi also maps routes on the ATES scale (Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale), which rates how exposed a line is to avalanches. If you have no avalanche training, keep to the marked pistes and book a guide for anything beyond them.
How do you get to Baqueira-Beret?
Fly to Lleida, Toulouse, Tarbes, Pau or Barcelona and finish by road: the Val d'Aran has no airport and no railway. Visit Val d'Aran, the valley's tourist board, gives the distances to Vielha, the valley's capital near the resort: Lleida 145 km, Pau 157 km, Tarbes 161 km, Toulouse 166 km and Barcelona 350 km. Across the border in Andorra, Grandvalira is the largest ski area in the Pyrenees: our guide to skiing Soldeu covers it.
Most drivers arrive through the Vielha tunnel, 5,173 m long, from the south. From France, the road crosses at Pont de Rei. From the east, the C-28 climbs over the Bonaigua pass at 2,072 m, so check it is open before you set off. Without a car, the nearest stations are Luchon, 40 km away, and Montrejeau, 60 km, both in France. ALSA, the Spanish coach company, runs a daily direct bus from Barcelona, services from Lleida and buses between the valley's villages. A group of friends flying into Toulouse will want a hire car, while a couple happy to sit back can ride the ALSA bus from Barcelona.
Plan a rest day on Nordic loops and in the villages
Spend a rest day on the 7 km Nordic circuit at Pla de Beret, which is free to use without a lift pass. It is the home of the Marxa Beret, a classic technique race of 42, 21 and 10 km. The Conselh Generau d'Aran and the resort run it, and it draws about 1,000 skiers. Snowshoe routes are well marked in the side valleys. Salardú, a short drive from the slopes, rewards a slow walk for its Romanesque church and quiet stone streets.
Evenings are Aranese: hearty mountain dishes on the slopes, a good choice of dinner in Vielha and Salardú, late nights at the resort base. When you are ready to set dates, weigh up stays and plan the week on our Baqueira-Beret ski page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Baqueira-Beret the largest ski resort in Spain?
Yes. Baqueira-Beret is the largest ski resort in Spain, with 173 km of marked pistes, 131 runs and 36 lifts across the Baqueira, Beret, Bonaigua and Baciver areas, and 2,273 hectares of terrain between 1,500 m and 2,610 m.
Is Baqueira-Beret good for snowboarders?
Yes. The resort has a snowpark, a funpark and a boardercross course, a race track of banks and jumps ridden by several riders at once, and Beret has hosted the Snowboard Cross World Cup. Snowboarders also compete on Tuc de Bacivèr at the Freeride World Tour's January stop.
Should you rent skis in Baqueira-Beret or bring your own?
Renting makes sense if you are new to the area: local shops carry a good range of gear, and you can try different skis without carrying them. If you rent skis but bring your own boots, check the bindings fit them. If you ski on boots fitted to your feet, or skis tuned for a big freeride week, bring your own.
Does the Spanish royal family ski at Baqueira-Beret?
Yes. The ski title Snow Magazine describes Baqueira-Beret as the ski resort of choice for the Spanish royal family, who have their own winter home here. The blue Dera Reina in the Beret area takes its name, the Queen's slope, from royalty who have long skied the resort.
Baqueira-Beret rewards a skier who matches the area to the day: Beret for the first turns, Bonaigua for long legs, Baciver and the Lauegi bulletin for the big lines. For the other mountains we know, see ski holidays with theKlub. Before you book flights, check that the 28 November opening is confirmed, then pick your airport.
