In short

Skiing Soldeu puts you in the middle of Grandvalira, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees, with 210 km of linked slopes between 1,710 m and 2,640 m. Beginners learn at Espiolets, at the top of the gondola, intermediates have almost half the runs in blue, and the season runs December to April.

The gondola lifts you out of the village to Espiolets at 2,250 m, where the ski schools and mountain restaurants sit. Turn west and blue runs carry you to El Tarter. Turn east and the slopes link all the way to Pas de la Casa. And right above the rooftops runs the Avet, the slope where the best racers in the world finished their World Cup seasons in 2019 and 2023.

What is skiing in Soldeu like?

Skiing in Soldeu means wide, mostly blue and red runs above a village at 1,710 m, linked to the whole of Grandvalira, the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees. Soldeu is one of its seven areas, with Encamp, Canillo, El Tarter, Peretol, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa. One lift network joins them, so you can ski the lot without taking your skis off. The Ski Club of Great Britain, the club for British skiers, counts 210 km of slopes and 62 lifts, between 1,710 m and 2,640 m. A gondola and a fast six-pack, a chairlift that seats six, climb from the village to Espiolets. From there the runs link west to El Tarter and east to Pas de la Casa. Almost every run sits above 2,000 m and a good share has snowmaking. Drops of more than 500 m are common. The terrain suits beginners and intermediates best.

The Ski Club is honest about the rest. The village is functional rather than pretty, strung along a busy through road. It has a good buzz, though, and a calmer feel than Pas de la Casa, which makes it a strong pick for families. Advanced skiers find their best days after fresh snow. Our ski in Soldeu page holds the hotels we rate there and when to go. To weigh it against Spain's largest resort across the border, read our guide to skiing Baqueira-Beret.

Is Soldeu good for beginners and families?

Yes. The Ski Club calls the beginner terrain excellent, and the ski school's reputation too. The one thing to plan around is the nursery area. It sits up at Espiolets, so early learners ride the gondola up each morning and back down at the end of the day. The next step is close: almost half the runs in the area are blue. Grandvalira has 24 green runs, its very easiest. Its beginners' pass covers the cable car in your area and some lifts in the beginners' area, but no lift up to harder slopes.

Grandvalira's ski school runs a 1-day group lesson for first-timers in Soldeu and El Tarter, any day of the week, from 6 years old. It is for skiers only, not snowboarders. Courses of 3, 4 or 5 days, 3 hours a day, start here on Mondays and Saturdays, with an extra start on 27 December. Group lessons suit a first-timer who likes company and a fixed time to show up. A private lesson takes up to 6 people per instructor. It suits friends or family of a similar age and level who want their own pace, and the school advises it when you need one particular language.

Soldeu is popular with British and Irish skiers, and its ski school has a large number of native English-speaking instructors. Children from 6 to 11 have their own group lessons. Children's snowboard lessons run only in Soldeu, El Tarter and Canillo, and the Yôkai children's circuit is in the Soldeu area. Most children's activities are up at Espiolets, so there is less for them to do in the village. The Ski Club's tip: a bigger hotel with a pool.

Pick your runs: blues, blacks and the World Cup Avet

Intermediates should ride the length of Grandvalira, and strong skiers should start on the Avet. Trips to either end of the area, El Tarter one way and Pas de la Casa the other, are within reach of every intermediate. Take the Rossinyol, a blue run towards the Canillo access lift, for its views and its quiet. From the top of the Soldeu gondola, the blue Gall de Bosc runs to the top of the El Tarter gondola or down to El Tarter village.

The Avet is Soldeu's technical race slope. It hosted the World Cup Finals of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) in 2019 and 2023, and the Europa Cup Finals in 2022. In 2019 the speed races ran on the Àliga in El Tarter and the technical races on the Avet. Marcel Hirscher and Mikaela Shiffrin were crowned the season's overall champions. Soldeu's World Cup story began in February 2012 with women's giant slalom and slalom. Women's super-G and combined followed in 2016.

One honest note: the Ski Club warns that many blacks on the map would be reds elsewhere. Without fresh snow, advanced skiers have limited options. After a snowfall, much of the terrain becomes ski-anywhere. Grandvalira marks freeride routes, lines off the groomed pistes, on its resort map and teaches freeride classes. Every area has ski mountaineering circuits too.

  • Confident beginners: blues from Espiolets, then the Gall de Bosc to El Tarter.
  • Intermediates: a day each to El Tarter and Pas de la Casa, with the Rossinyol on the way.
  • Strong skiers: the Avet, the freeride routes on a powder day, and the Àliga in El Tarter.
  • Freestyle riders: the snowparks at El Tarter, Grau Roig and Peretol, where Sunset Park Peretol is the only snowpark in the Pyrenees open at night.

When is the best time to ski in Soldeu?

January and February are the best time to ski in Soldeu, when the snow is usually most consistent. Early December and late March are quieter, with fewer people on the slopes. Grandvalira plans its 2026/2027 season for 4 December to 4 April, weather permitting. Lifts run 9:00 to 17:00 every day, holidays included, and ticket offices open 8:45 to 15:00. Slopes can get crowded in the holidays, so a group that can travel outside them gets more room.

The table below is theKlub's climate record for Soldeu village, averaged from Open-Meteo data for 2016 to 2025. It gives the daytime high, the night low and the days each month with 1 mm or more of rain or snow. It shows the weather where you sleep, not the snow on the mountain, so check Grandvalira's live conditions before you travel. January is the coldest month in the village: 1.8 °C by day, 5.3 °C below zero at night. March has the most wet days of the season, at 15.

How do you get to Soldeu?

Fly to Barcelona or Toulouse, then drive or take a bus: Andorra has no airport of its own. Visit Andorra, the country's tourist board, lists Toulouse-Blagnac, Barcelona-El Prat, Girona-Costa Brava, Perpignan, Carcassonne and Reus among the international airports within 200 km. The closest airfield is Andorra-La Seu Airport in La Seu d'Urgell, with Air Nostrum routes to Madrid and Palma de Mallorca. The Ski Club puts Barcelona and Toulouse airports around three hours away and calls a hire car the best option.

By road, the N-145 comes up from La Seu d'Urgell in Spain. From France, the N-22, N-20 and N-320 cross the Col de Puymorens pass and tunnel. Scheduled buses link Andorra with more than twenty cities, Barcelona and Toulouse among them. The nearest station is L'Hospitalet-près-l'Andorre in France, about 11 km by road from the border. From Spain, high-speed AVE trains from Madrid and Barcelona stop at Lleida Pirineus. In winter, Grandvalira says to always carry snow chains and check the roads on mobilitat.ad, the Government of Andorra's live page. Andorra's two smaller ski areas sit in the north-west: read our guides to skiing Arinsal and Pal and skiing Ordino Arcalís.

Finish the day: après, rest days and a bed by the lifts

End the day in the village bars, many with live music or DJs: the Ski Club's favourites are the Aspen, Fat Albert's and the Villager. For a bigger night, Pas de la Casa is the party end of Grandvalira. On the mountain, the Soldeu area has the Clicquot Snow Club Terrace and the Wine & Meat Bar by Jean Leon. Its restaurants also open for dinner on request.

On a rest day, Grandvalira's other areas keep everyone busy. El Tarter's Grandvalira Adventure Center runs dog sledding and snowshoeing. Canillo has the Mon(t) Magic Family Park, a zip line among the longest in the Pyrenees and the 555 m Màgic Gliss toboggan run.

Soldeu has quality hotels at the foot of the slopes and plenty of beds within easy reach of the lifts. The main road is busy, but quieter spots are close by. Two we rate in the village are Serras Andorra, a 5-star that guests score 9.8 out of 10, and Sport Hotel Village, a 4-star at 8.8. For more weeks built around the mountain, see our ski holidays with theKlub.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need Spanish or Catalan to ski in Soldeu?

No. Catalan is the local language, but Soldeu is popular with British and Irish visitors and English is spoken in many shops and restaurants. The ski school has a large number of native English-speaking instructors. Grandvalira teaches group lessons in several languages and suggests a private lesson when you need one particular language.

Should you rent skis in Soldeu or bring your own?

Renting in Soldeu is the simpler choice for a first-timer: the village has ski and snowboard shops with a wide range of gear. If you ski often or rely on boots and skis set up for you, bring your own, and have them serviced before the trip.

Is there night skiing near Soldeu?

Yes, elsewhere in Grandvalira. The Pas de la Casa area has a night skiing slope, and Sunset Park Peretol is the only snowpark in the Pyrenees open at night. Check Grandvalira's opening dates and times before you plan an evening around either.

What happens to your lift pass if bad weather shuts the slopes?

Grandvalira does not refund passes or services because of bad weather. If the resort closes, go to one of its ticket offices, open 8:45 to 15:00 every day of the season: the staff explain what happens next, which depends on the pass and services you bought.

A week in Soldeu falls into place around the lessons. Pick a start day: a Monday or a Saturday for a 3 to 5 day course, or any day for a first-timer's single lesson. Then pencil in a day for El Tarter and one for Pas de la Casa, and watch the forecast for the powder day the Avet deserves. Your next step: choose the week, then book the lessons and a day or multi-day pass for the same dates.
