In short
Skiing Saalbach-Hinterglemm puts you on 270 km of linked slopes in the Skicircus, shared with Leogang and Fieberbrunn. That is 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km black, served by 70 lifts. Beginners start on the Turmwiese, intermediates ride the circuits and experts take the Zwölferkogel north run. The 2026/27 season runs 27 November to 4 April.
The first single lifts turn at 8.00 am. First-timers make their opening turns on the Turmwiese in the middle of Saalbach. Stronger skiers are already riding the Schattberg X-press out of the village, with both sides of the Glemm Valley to choose from. In February 2025 the world's best racers came down the Zwölferkogel above Hinterglemm for the Alpine World Ski Championships. On 27 and 28 February 2027 the men's World Cup downhill and super-G return to the same mountain. The rest of the winter, that slope belongs to anyone with a lift ticket and strong legs.
How big is the Skicircus, and how does it fit together?
The Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn is one of the largest ski areas in Austria, with 270 km of slopes. There are 140 km of blue runs (the easiest marked pistes), 112 km of red runs (the intermediate grade) and 18 km of black runs (the steepest). Seventy cable cars and lifts join four villages: Saalbach and Hinterglemm in the Glemm Valley, Leogang next door, and Fieberbrunn across the state border in Tyrol. A strong skier can link all four on skis in a single day. Along the way sit more than 60 mountain huts, several snow parks, a freeride park, floodlit slopes and toboggan runs, and most pistes have snowmaking. The mix leans towards long blue and red runs, a natural fit for intermediates who count a good day in kilometres. The black runs and the freeride terrain keep stronger skiers busy for a week.
Want glacier snow too? The Ski ALPIN CARD adds the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See and the Kitzsteinhorn at Kaprun, for up to 408 km of slopes on one ticket. The resort's Home of Lässig app carries the piste map, navigation on the mountain and mobile tickets, so download it before you travel. Our page for ski in Saalbach-Hinterglemm brings together the valley's ski-friendly hotels and what theKlub knows about the resort. For scale, France's Les 3 Vallées links 600 km of pistes; our guide to ski holidays in Val Thorens covers it.
Where should beginners and families ski in Saalbach-Hinterglemm?
Beginners should start in the village centres, on the Turmwiese in Saalbach and the flat drag-lift area in Hinterglemm, then move up the mountain once their turns link. Know this first: here a run is graded by its average gradient. A blue can start gently and still hide a steeper pitch further down. The resort's own list of its top 10 beginner slopes picks runs that are wide, flat and easy to reach. These six are on the Saalbach and Hinterglemm side.
- Turmwiese, Saalbach: ride the H3 Turm 6er chairlift to piste 152, an even gradient with a view over the village centre.
- Hinterglemm centre: a flat practice area on the A7 Oberschwarzachlifte and A8 Funparklift drag lifts, made for first turns.
- A11 Wieshoflift: a short button lift by the road just before Hinterglemm, for your very first attempts.
- Upper Bernkogel: the top of piste 146 beside the G2 Bernkogel 6er is very flat, with a big panorama. The valley run gets much steeper a few hundred metres below the top station, so take the Bernkogelbahn back down.
- Schattberg, piste 4: from the A1/A2 Schattberg X-press turn right; the Muldenabfahrt branches left to the A5 Limberg chairlift. Skip the 2a valley run, whose last slope often catches beginners out, and ride the X-press down.
- Piste 73, D3 Rosswald 6er: a little steeper, but easy in good conditions once you can turn both ways.
For a day out with a mixed group, Leogang's Asitz has a very flat slope on the L9 button lift and an easy line down piste 215, with views to the Steinernes Meer. Fieberbrunn's Streuböden has a long, very flat slope on the F6 Zillstatt button lift, and Timok's Coaster, included in the ski pass, makes a fast change of pace. Children who can already turn have the Snow Trail on the Bernkogel and the fun slopes on the Zwölferkogel. Riding a gondola down is normal here: the resort recommends it wherever the valley run is harder than the top.
Ski the circuits: which loop suits your legs?
Pick the Saalbach circuit for a gentle first day, the Leogang loop for a relaxed tour, the Hinterglemm loop for vertical and the Tyrol circuit if you love reds. The resort publishes each Skicircus circuit with its route, lifts and figures. Vertical here means the total height you ski down, and the times leave out stops at the huts.
| Circuit | Length | Time | Vertical | Lifts | Pistes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saalbach | 19 km | 2 hours | 3,600 m | 8 | 100 per cent blue |
| Hinterglemm | 25 km | 2.5 hours | 6,500 m | 13 | 66 per cent blue, 34 per cent red |
| Leogang | 26 km | 2.5 hours | 4,300 m | 11 | 100 per cent blue |
| Tyrol | 22 km | 2.5 hours | 4,300 m | 14 | 28 per cent blue, 72 per cent red |
The Saalbach circuit is the resort's welcome loop, all blue, and at Kohlmais it crosses the slalom and giant slalom runs of the 1991 Alpine World Ski Championships. The Hinterglemm circuit packs in the most descent per kilometre, for sporty skiers who like long runs and a hut stop. At the A9 Unterschwarzach lift, the SkiMovie and speed runs film and time your own descent.
The Leogang circuit suits a group of mixed ability. It starts on the east-facing Asitzmulde in freshly groomed snow, crosses the gentle south-facing slopes of Schönleiten and Kohlmais, and returns over the Schattberg facing the Leogang Mountains. The Tyrol circuit crosses into Tyrol on demanding reds; ride the E1+E2 Reckmoos Nord twice, as the resort suggests, for its natural, wavy slopes.
Then there is The Challenge, the full Skicircus circuit: 65 km and 12,400 vertical metres round the whole area in one day. The resort times it between 8.30 am and 4.15 pm and calls it probably the longest of its kind in the Alps. It suits a fit group of confident skiers who want one big day together. Record it on the Home of Lässig or iSKI app to compare times with other Challengers, start on the first lift and keep lunch short.
Where are the steepest runs and the best freeride terrain?
The steepest piste skiing is on the Zwölferkogel above Hinterglemm, the mountain of the 2025 World Championships, and the best freeride terrain is around Fieberbrunn. The Zwölferkogel north run leaves the top station of the Zwölferkogelbahn and drops 920 m over 3.6 km to Hinterglemm, with a 72 per cent gradient at its steepest. At the top, turn left for black piste 15, the men's race line, or right for red piste 13, the women's. The two join as 13A down to the village. The race slope is watered to set it hard, so expect firm snow, especially around race time, and warm up your short turns first.
Off the piste, the Skicircus has its own freeride park, freeride routes of different grades and an info point. Avalanche transceiver search fields and checkpoints let you practise with and test your beacon, and LO.LA is the region's own snow and avalanche report. The resort's freeride guidance is plain: new to the area, go with a guide or join a freeride camp. Fieberbrunn calls itself a freeride mecca. Its Wildseeloder north face hosts the only Freeride World Tour stop in Austria and Germany, where riders climb about 40 minutes to a start at 2,118 m and drop slopes of up to 70 degrees. Spectators reach the finish area at the Wildalmen on the F1 Streuböden and F2 Lärchfilzkogel lifts.
When is the best time to ski Saalbach-Hinterglemm?
The best time to ski Saalbach-Hinterglemm is December to April, and the planned 2026/27 season runs from 27 November 2026 to 4 April 2027, subject to change. January is busy with holiday travellers. Early December and late March are quieter, with shorter queues, though some facilities run reduced hours and some slopes may be less accessible. The Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup brings the men's downhill and super-G to the Zwölferkogel on 27 and 28 February 2027. Ski operations continue without restrictions, and you can ski to the finish from any part of the Skicircus.
The table below is theKlub's month-by-month climate for Saalbach-Hinterglemm. It gives average daily highs and lows and the days with 1 mm or more of rain or snow, from Open-Meteo data for 2016 to 2025. The readings are taken at the destination's centre point in the valley, so they show valley weather, not snow depth on the mountain.
| Month | High | Low | Rain or snow days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 2.4 °C | -6.8 °C | 14.7 |
| February | 5.5 °C | -4.6 °C | 12.2 |

| December | 4.1 °C | -4.4 °C | 13.6 |
In that record February has the fewest days of rain or snow in the ski season, 12.2 against 14.7 in January, and its daily highs average 5.5°C. January is the coldest, with nights averaging minus 6.8°C, so pack a proper mid layer for the first lifts.

Should you rent skis in Saalbach-Hinterglemm or bring your own?
Renting is usually easier: the valley's rental shops carry current kit and can adjust it on the spot, so check whether a helmet is included. Skiers with boots fitted to their feet, or a week planned on the steeps, should bring their own. Austrian, Swiss and German rail luggage services can deliver bags to the resort.
Saalbach-Hinterglemm rewards the skier who plans the mountain as well as the hotel. Blues for the first morning, a circuit once the legs wake up, the Zwölferkogel when you are ready for the racers' line. For trips planned around the sport itself, see our ski holidays with theKlub. Pick your week first, then ask your hotel to register you early so the Guest Mobility Ticket is waiting in your app before you board the train.
