In short

Skiing in Kitzbühel means the KitzSki area: 233 km of slopes and 58 lifts linking Kitzbühel, Reith, Aurach and Jochberg, with 46 blue, 32 red and 18 black runs. The Hahnenkamm holds the Streif, the Kitzbüheler Horn suits families, free valley lifts suit first-timers, and the full lift connection runs from 11 December 2026 to 29 March 2027.

Step off the train at Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm and the gondola is right next to the station. Ride it up and the top station sits next to the start house of the Streif, the downhill at the heart of the Hahnenkamm Races every January and one of the hardest courses in world racing. That is how close a legend sits to the rails. Below lies a 750-year-old town; around it, slopes where a first-timer, a family and a racer at heart can each find their run and still meet for lunch.

Where do you ski in Kitzbühel?

You ski the KitzSki area, spread over the mountains on both sides of the town, and each area suits a different kind of day.

Kitzbühel's ski area divides into connected and standalone areas around the town. The Hahnenkamm, on the western side, is the heart: home of the Streif, with the densest spread of mountain restaurants and slopes for every level, reached by the A1 Hahnenkammbahn gondola less than a 10-minute walk from the centre. From there the D9 3S cable car links south to Jochberg and Pass Thurn, wide and open slopes with a high-alpine feel and views towards the Hohe Tauern. Together these form one of the largest interconnected ski areas in the Alps. East of town sit two smaller, separate areas: the Kitzbüheler Horn, with 11 runs suited to families and groups of mixed ability, and the Bichlalm, kept for ski touring. Reith has beginner slopes for children and families, and the Gaisberg in Kirchberg adds a toboggan run. In all, 58 lifts serve 233 km of slopes, 181 km of them marked and groomed.

Kitzbühel's tourist board rates the Hahnenkamm for advanced skiers and groups who want varied slopes and a push on towards Jochberg and Pass Thurn. The area has three more access lifts: the B1 Fleckalmbahn, the B2 Maierlbahn and the D1 Pengelstein I. The Horn is the sunny, quieter side, popular with families, relaxed skiers and snowboarders, and compact enough that a group can split across different slopes and still regroup for lunch. Our Kitzbühel ski page keeps the hotels we rate here in one place.

Can you ski the Streif?

You can ski right beside it: the Streif Family Run, Run 21, runs alongside the race course in several places, with views of the Mausefalle, the Alte Schneise, the Hausbergkante, the Zielschuss and the Zielsprung. The Streif start house stands right next to the top station of the A1 gondola, so the legendary start slope is the first thing you see. From the same run you can pick out the Super G start and the Ganslernhang, where the slalom is raced.

The numbers explain the respect. The Hahnenkamm Races organisers give the course as 3,312 m long with 860 m of vertical, starting at 1,665 m and finishing at 805 m. The average gradient is 27 per cent and the steepest pitch 85 per cent. Racers drop down a 160 m Starthang at 51 per cent and reach the Mausefalle in 8.5 seconds, where jumps can carry them up to 80 m. Then come the Karussell, where they take 3.1 g, and the Steilhang, counted among the World Cup's most technically challenging slopes. The course record of 1:51.58 has stood since 1997.

The Family Run suits confident skiers who want the story under their skis. The 87th Hahnenkamm Races run from 18 to 24 January 2027, the week to watch rather than to cruise.

Is Kitzbühel good for beginners?

Yes, and it starts for free: the tourist board counts more than 10 free practice lifts in the valley, plus more than 15 ski schools and more than 16 rental shops. Three of the free lifts, the A2 Mocking, the A3 Rasmusleiten and the A4 Ministreif, sit right next to the A1 Hahnenkammbahn, so a family can split between the practice slope and the gondola. Others are in Reith, Jochberg, Pass Thurn, Kirchberg and Aschau.

Once you can stop, a ski pass opens easy runs on the mountain. The Kitzbühel beginners' guide points first-timers to the A7 Märchenwaldlift, the most popular learning area on the mountain, reached by the A1 Hahnenkammbahn. From there the Waldpiste (21) leads to the A8 Wald chairlift, and later trail 37 heads towards Melkalm. Around the Ehrenbachhöhe, off the Fleckalmbahn, Sonnenrast (18) and the two Kaser runs (16 and 26) are made for practice. Run 70b, Resterkögel, reached by the Panoramabahn or the Resterhöhebahn, is a quiet, easy descent. Take these with an instructor at first, as the tourist board advises.

Children get their own terrain: the Family Park on the Horn, with a magic carpet (a conveyor belt you stand on), drag lifts and small jumps, and Bärenland at Jochberg, an adventure trail through varied ground. Pick the long reds and blacks worth the lift ride

Strong skiers should start with the runs the tourist board names for them: Run 66 JagaWurz, Run 27a Brunn and Run 73 Hartkaser for advanced skiers, and Run 75 Zweitausender, Run 23 Griesalm and Run 62 Bärenbadkogel I for athletic, very good skiers. The wide, groomed slopes are built for long carving turns, the kind where the edges do the work and the legs feel it by lunch.

For a big day, chase the KitzSkiWelt Tour, a circuit linking KitzSki with the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental area: 88 km and 17,232 m of total elevation gain over 30 blue, 27 red and 1 black slope. Groups of mixed ability can meet in the middle: the Sonnenrast restaurant at the Fleckalmbahn top has a large sun terrace and suits groups with varying skill levels. Around the Hahnenkammbahn top station sit Tomschy, Hocheckhütte, Hahnenkammstüberl, Berghaus Tirol and Sonnbühel, and the Pinzgablick at the Panoramabahn looks out to the Hohe Tauern. In all there are more than 40 mountain huts and restaurants.

When is the best time to ski in Kitzbühel?

Mid December to late March is the safest bet, because that is when the full lift connection is open. For 2026/27, KitzSki's season plan starts at the Resterkogel on 6 November 2026, with public skiing at weekends only. The first Hahnenkamm weekend follows on 21 and 22 November, the Hahnenkamm and Fleckalm run daily from 27 or 28 November, and the Horn runs from 28 November to 21 March 2027. The full connection, Hahnenkamm to Resterhöhe by the 3S, runs from 11 December 2026 to 29 March 2027, and a finale on the Hahnenkamm, Fleckalm and Pengelstein runs to 4 April. All dates depend on the snow.

January brings the Hahnenkamm Races and the crowds that come with them. Late November and early December can mean good skiing with fewer people, though only part of the area is open before 11 December.

Get there by train and stay close to the lifts

Take the train if you can: Kitzbühel has three stations, and Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm sits right next to the Hahnenkamm gondola. The tourist board calls it the fastest route from Munich, Innsbruck and Salzburg, and the best stop for stays near the slopes. Kitzbühel station, the largest, is 10 minutes from the centre, and Kitzbühel Schwarzsee sits by the lake. The nearest airports are Salzburg at 81 km, Innsbruck at 96 km and Munich at 127 km; from Innsbruck it is 1 hour and 10 minutes by train with a change in Wörgl. Driving, you need a vignette, the Austrian motorway toll sticker. Six Kitzbühel bus routes link Reith, Aurach and Jochberg with the town.

For a base, these are the Kitzbühel hotels theKlub rates for skiers. Pick Kitzhof Mountain Design Resort, five stars and a 9.4 guest rating, when the hotel is part of the treat. For a four-star base, Aktivhotel Schweizerhof Kitzbühel and Alpenhotel Kitzbühel am Schwarzsee both score 9.3, and the Alpenhotel, as its name says, sits by the Schwarzsee, which has its own station. For a simpler three-star stay, Hotel Edelweiss Kitzbühel (9.6 from 306 guest reviews) and Hotel Resch (9.4 from 237) score as high as anything on this list.

Frequently asked questions

Can you ski from Kitzbühel into the SkiWelt?

Yes. The KitzSkiWelt Tour is a ski circuit that links KitzSki with the SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser Brixental area: 88 km with 17,232 m of total elevation gain over 30 blue, 27 red and 1 black slope. From the Hahnenkamm area there is also a bus to KI-West, which gives access to the SkiWelt's further 275 km of slopes. KitzSki publishes the circuit's ticket details.

Is Kitzbühel on the Ikon Pass?

Yes. Kitzbühel's tourist board lists Kitzbühel as an Ikon Pass resort. How many days your pass gives you here depends on your Ikon pass type, so check it with Ikon before you plan a week around it, and buy a KitzSki pass for any extra days.

What can non-skiers do in Kitzbühel?

Plenty. The Hahnenkamm gondola carries pedestrians, with views over the surrounding peaks, and the Horn is set up for non-skiers too. In town, the medieval old town is compact and walkable, with the Liebfrauenkirche, Tyrolean restaurants and cafés, and the Aquarena has pools and saunas. The Gaisberg in Kirchberg has a toboggan run.

Should you rent skis in Kitzbühel or bring your own?

Rent skis and poles at first if you are new; Kitzbühel has more than 16 rental shops, and helmets can be rented too. If ordinary shoes are hard to fit, buy ski boots fitted to you. If you are used to a particular setup, bring your own skis.

Kitzbühel rewards a little planning: the right area for your level, a run beside the Streif for the story, and a week inside the fully linked season. Other resorts are one click away in ski holidays with theKlub. Start with the date: pick a week between 11 December and 29 March, then book the bed nearest the lift you will ride first.
