Skiing Vogel: pick the right runs above Lake Bohinj

Ride natural snow inside Triglav National Park, with the lifts, the long run to the lake and the way up without a car.

theKlub

In short

Skiing Vogel means 22 km of natural snow runs inside Triglav National Park, reached by cable car from Ukanc on Lake Bohinj. The lifts top out at 1,800 m. The runs are blue and red with no black, so the mountain suits intermediates best. The season runs from December to early April, snow permitting.

The cabin leaves the lakeshore at Ukanc and 4.2 minutes later sets you down at 1,535 m, with Lake Bohinj below and the peaks of the Julian Alps lined up around it. Up here, every flake on the piste fell from the sky. That is the deal at Vogel: a compact ski area high above the lake, run on natural snow alone, which makes it a mountain worth reading before you ride it.

What is skiing at Vogel really like?

Vogel is a compact, high ski area above Lake Bohinj in the Julian Alps, set inside Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park. Skiers reach it by cable car from Ukanc, at the western end of the lake, rising from 569 m to the top station at 1,535 m, and the highest lift reaches 1,800 m. The resort counts 22 km of slopes over 78 ha: 9,500 m of easy blue runs and 12,500 m of intermediate red runs, and its own piste map marks no black runs at all. Every run is on natural snow, so what opens follows the weather. When the valley holds snow too, Žagarjev graben opens, a run the resort puts at 7.5 km and the longest in Slovenia, from the top of the Šija chairlift down to the cable car's bottom station. Vogel is known for its quiet and its scenery rather than its size, and a confident skier can cover most of it in one day.

That makes it a strong pick for intermediates on a long weekend, for a group of friends who rate views and a slow lunch at one of its four restaurants over big mileage, and for families learning together at the top station. Our ski in Vogel page keeps the destination's essentials in one place. Kranjska Gora, Slovenia's World Cup resort, is also in the Julian Alps: read our guide to skiing Kranjska Gora.

Which runs at Vogel suit your level?

Vogel suits intermediates best, with a free learning area for first timers at the top and one long valley run for strong legs. Nine lifts serve the area, counting the cable car and a moving carpet, and the resort lists every run with its length on its current conditions page.

First timers. The Children's Park sits by the top station of the cable car and suits adult beginners too. You need only a cable car ticket while you stay in it, no ski pass. When your instructor says you are ready for the slopes, you pay the difference for a ski pass at the upper ticket office.

Short laps. Three T-bar lifts (drag lifts that pull you uphill on a bar behind your legs) serve short runs, good for repeating a turn until it sticks: Storeč at 400 m, Konta at 250 m and Kratki plaz at 520 m, each with a longer bypass of 640 m, 480 m and 940 m. The Brunarica four-person chairlift serves a 320 m run beside them.

Intermediates. The Orlove glave four-person chairlift opens the 1,300 m Orlove glave run, and the longer descents head to Zadnji Vogel: 2,100 m from Orlove glave and 2,200 m from Brunarica. The ten-person Zadnji Vogel gondola, the resort's newest lift, runs on the Orlove glave to Zadnji Vogel slope. The Šija single chairlift serves Šija to Konta (1,250 m) and Šija to Zadnji Vogel (1,380 m).

Strong skiers. Žagarjev graben is the run to save legs for: it drops from the top of the Šija chairlift all the way to the cable car's bottom station by the lake, open only when there is enough snow in the valley. The Šija, Konta and Kratki plaz lifts stop at 14:30, earlier than the rest, so ride them first.

Freestylers. Vogel has the largest snow park in Slovenia, with features for first jumps and for experienced riders.

Freeriders. In a good snow year the terrain beyond the groomed pistes opens up, and you are skiing in a national park. Triglav National Park's winter advice asks for the full winter kit (avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel, an ice axe, crampons and a helmet), a check of snow and weather before every tour, and quiet movement: skip big turns through the forest and keep away from the forest edge, where animals shelter in winter.

When is the best time to ski Vogel?

Ski Vogel between December and early April, and aim for mid-winter, when colder days keep the snow in good shape and most of the area runs. Because Vogel skis on natural snow only, the season follows the weather each year: the 2025/26 season closed on 6 April 2026.

This winter the start is fixed by the calendar as well as the snow. The Vogel ski resort has closed its cable car for maintenance from 21 September to about 30 November 2026, so plan your first turns for December at the earliest. Holidays and weekends bring skiers up from Slovenia's cities. Early and late season weeks are quieter, if the snow has come.

The table below gives theKlub's monthly averages for Vogel from Open-Meteo, 2016 to 2025. They are taken at the destination's centre point and read like the lake valley, not the slopes: January there averages a high of 5.0 °C and a low of minus 1.9 °C. The last column counts days with rain or snow, so read it as valley weather and pack for colder air at the top.

How do you get to Vogel without the parking stress?

Everyone reaches the slopes by the cable car from Ukanc, so the real question is how you get to Ukanc. The cable car climbs from 569 m to 1,535 m in 4.2 minutes, with 80 people a cabin plus the operator and up to 950 people an hour. It does not run in storms.

By car, which suits a group chasing the first lift: park free under the bottom station or in the paid car parks in Ukanc. Parking anywhere else, the main road included, is not allowed and police fine it. Tourism Bohinj, the valley's tourist board, warns that the car parks fill quickly.

By ski bus, which suits anyone staying in the valley: the SKI BUS Bohinj runs to Vogel in the main ski season, free with the Winter Julian Alps: Bohinj Card. You can leave the car at your hotel or in the quieter car parks in Bohinjska Bistrica.

By train and bus, which suits a day from Ljubljana: the closest station is Bohinjska Bistrica, and a direct bus from Ljubljana stops at Vogel križišče, the crossroads stop for the cable car, passing through Bohinjska Bistrica on the way. Ljubljana airport is 60 km from Bohinj.

Book lessons and hire kit at the top station

Book lessons and hire at the top: two ski schools work on Vogel, and both rent kit near the upper cable car station. Ski Finžgar is a member of the Association of Ski Schools Slovenia, rents Elan skis and snowboards and services kit, from bindings to repairs. Alpinsport is a member of the Association of Ski Teachers and Trainers of Slovenia (ZUTS), its instructors speak English, German and Croatian, and it also rents from a shop in Ribčev Laz on the lake. Alpinsport hires avalanche transceivers and lets guests leave ski kit overnight at Vogel. The ski school and rental page lists both.

Hiring at the top saves carrying skis on the cable car. If you ski in boots fitted to your feet, or on skis you know well, bring your own.

Where should you stay for skiing at Vogel?

Stay in the Bohinj valley and let the ski bus do the driving. These are the Bohinj hotels theKlub rates, with their guest scores.

For a group of friends, Hotel Gasperin Bohinj (3 stars) scores 9.4 out of 10 from 1,758 reviews. Art Hotel Kristal (4 stars) scores 8.7 out of 10 from 1,265 reviews.

For a couple who want a step up after the slopes, Hotel Majerca Superior (4 stars) scores 9.4 out of 10 from 396 reviews. Hotel Jezero (4 stars, 8.5 out of 10 from 2,939 reviews) stands across the street from the Alpinsport shop in Ribčev Laz, handy if you hire. Bohinj Eco Hotel (4 stars) also scores 8.5 out of 10, from 3,437 reviews.

Stay at least two nights with a Tourism Bohinj partner and you can ask for the Winter Julian Alps: Bohinj Card, whose basic version is free and covers the ski bus. For more snow trips, see ski holidays with theKlub.

Frequently asked questions

Does Vogel make artificial snow?

No. The Vogel ski resort and the Slovenian Tourist Board both describe Vogel as a ski area with natural snow only, which is why its season and its open runs follow each winter's snowfall. Check the resort's lift and run status, updated from 7:00 on ski days, before you travel.

Can you ski from Vogel down to Lake Bohinj?

Yes, when the valley holds snow. Žagarjev graben runs from the top of the Šija chairlift to the cable car's bottom station at Ukanc, a run the resort puts at 7.5 km and calls the longest in Slovenia. Without snow low down, ride the cable car back to the lake.

How long is the Vogel cable car ride?

The ride takes 4.2 minutes, from the bottom station at 569 m to the top station at 1,535 m. Each cabin carries 80 people plus the operator, and the line moves up to 950 people an hour. It does not run during storms, and it is closed for maintenance until about 30 November 2026.

Can you ski all of Vogel in one day?

Most of it, yes. Vogel is compact, with 22 km of runs, so a confident intermediate can ski most of the area in a single day. Ride the Šija, Konta and Kratki plaz lifts first, since they stop at 14:30, and keep Žagarjev graben for the end of the day if the valley has snow.

Vogel rewards the skier who plans around the snow: a mid-winter week, a bed by the lake, the ski bus to Ukanc and the early closing lifts before lunch. Pick your dates for December onwards, then check the resort's current conditions page at 7:00 on the morning you ride up.
