In short
Where to stay in Val Thorens depends on the area. Grande Rue suits a first visit and the après-ski, Plein Sud suits skiing from the door, Soleil suits families and Les Balcons suits groups. For more value and a family focus, Les Menuires sits at 1,850 m; for a village evening, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville sits at 1,450 m.
At 2,300 m, Val Thorens is the highest ski resort in Europe, and the snow stays on the ground there from November to May. Most mornings start the same way: boots on, skis on, and the first lift a few paces from the door. So the real choice is which door. A family with a first-timer, a group of friends chasing the après-ski and a couple who want a quiet dinner each belong in a different corner of the resort, or in a different village down the valley.
Which Val Thorens area suits you?
Val Thorens is a semi-pedestrian resort of six areas: Soleil, Grande Rue, Balcons, Lombarde, Slalom and Plein Sud. Les 3 Vallées, the linked ski area Val Thorens belongs to, says on its website that the whole resort can be crossed on foot in twenty minutes. A free bus links the areas, so no area leaves you far from the snow. The Grande Rue and the resort centre suit a first visit, with the ski school, the snow front, the shops and the restaurants a few steps away. Plein Sud suits skiers who want to clip in at the door. It is sunny and set back from the busiest streets, with departures towards Méribel and Courchevel. Soleil is the quiet family pick, close to the beginner slopes and with far less traffic than the centre. Les Balcons sits higher, with views over the resort and spacious apartments for groups on longer stays. Lombarde and Slalom sit slightly away from the busiest streets, calm, with excellent lift access.
Most of the resort is built for ski-in/ski-out, which means you ski from your door to the lifts and back to it at the end of the day. The ski news site Ski Nordique counts an impressive number of places with genuine ski-in/ski-out access, so picking an area is more about the atmosphere you want than the walk to the lifts. Les 3 Vallées lists four 5-star hotels, five 4-star and four 3-star, plus apartments for up to 16 people, tourist residences and chalets. Our page on ski in Val Thorens keeps the resort's rated hotels in one place. For the runs, the lift pass and the best weeks, read our guide to ski holidays in Val Thorens.
Should you stay in Les Menuires or Saint-Martin-de-Belleville?
Stay in Les Menuires for a family week with most beds on the snow, and in Saint-Martin-de-Belleville for an old Savoyard village with a gondola up from the centre. A bus service runs through the valley from Val Thorens to both, so a lower base never cuts you off from the highest skiing.
Les Menuires was created in 1964 as part of France’s plan for new high-altitude ski areas, and its seventies buildings give it a modernist look unique in Les 3 Vallées. Its heart, La Croisette, sits at 1,850 m, and four more areas lie a short step away: Preyerand, Les Fontanettes, Grand Reberty and Les Bruyères. Free buses, public lifts and walking paths link them. The resort holds the Famille Plus quality award for families, with an XXL Piou Piou children’s ski village and 2 nurseries. Most of its accommodation is ski-in/ski-out. Les 3 Vallées calls it the value-for-money resort. High-altitude links take you into the rest of the ski area without taking your skis off.
Saint-Martin-de-Belleville sits at 1,450 m at the start of the Belleville valley, and its ski area reaches up to 2,400 m. Its twenty-two hamlets are grouped into 5 areas, with narrow streets, a Baroque church, an old bread oven and a village museum. You put your skis on in the village centre and ride a gondola, then a chairlift, into the 600 km of linked runs. Free buses run up to Val Thorens. Dinner is part of the reason to stay: La Bouitte holds 2 Michelin stars. It suits couples and friends who want quiet evenings more than a lively bar.
Which ski-in/ski-out hotels are worth booking?
The ski-in/ski-out hotels worth booking are Altapura Hôtel & Spa Val Thorens, Le Val Thorens, a Beaumier hotel and Le Hameau du Kashmir in Val Thorens, and the Hillary Hotel in Les Menuires. They are the four rated hotels theKlub lists here that a source places on the snow.
Altapura is a 5-star hotel directly on the Plein Sud slope, with an efficient ski room and a spa. Les 3 Vallées calls it the resort’s first ski palace, and guests rate it 9.1 out of 10 from 218 reviews. It suits a week of big days that end in the spa.

Le Val Thorens is a 4-star address in the heart of the resort, facing the snow front with immediate access to the major lifts, rated 8.8 out of 10 from 206 reviews. Pick it to sleep in the middle of the resort. Le Hameau du Kashmir is a hotel residence at the entrance of the resort with smooth ski-in/ski-out access and spacious apartments, rated 8.1 from 29 reviews. It suits families and groups who want room to spread out and a calmer evening.
Down in Les Menuires, the Hillary Hotel is a 3-star chalet hotel in Reberty 2000, the area on the heights of the resort. Its own website describes it as a ski-in/ski-out hotel at the foot of the pistes. It is also the oldest shelter chalet built in the Bellevilles, with a south-facing panoramic terrace and rooms for 1 to 4 people. Guests rate it 8.8 from 169 reviews. It suits a couple or a small family who want a fire in the lounge after skiing.
Six more rated stays are worth a look, though no source we read places them directly on the piste, so ask how far the nearest lift is before you book. In Val Thorens: Hotel 3 Vallées Val Thorens (4 stars, 8.9 from 107 reviews), Fahrenheit Seven Val Thorens (4 stars, 8.8 from 207), Chalet des Neiges Plein Sud (4 stars, 8.3) and Ancolies Val Thorens (9.1 from 10 reviews). In Les Menuires: Le Chalet du Mont Vallon Spa Resort (4 stars, 8.7 from 87) and Résidence Le Chalet du Mont Vallon (4 stars, 8.5 from 156).

When is the best time to go to Val Thorens?
Val Thorens is open from late November to early May, and the best weeks for space on the pistes are early December, January and late April, when lift queues are shorter and the runs quieter. Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays bring the biggest crowds and the liveliest village. In 2026/27 Val Thorens opens with the Grande Première on 21 November, and the full 3 Vallées ski area opens on 5 December, so a November week is a Val Thorens week.
The table below shows theKlub’s month by month climate for Val Thorens: average daily highs and lows, and days with rain or snow, from Open-Meteo data for 2016 to 2025.

Book around the season's big weekends
Five events are worth planning a stay around. The Grande Première opens the season on 21 and 22 November 2026 with two days of free equipment trials. Last year’s edition set its test village on Place Caron and added live concerts, a raclette party and fireworks. On 10 and 11 December 2026 the FIS Ski Cross World Cup returns for the fourteenth year in a row. The Club des sports de Val Thorens runs two World Cup rounds on the Jean-Frédéric Chapuis piste. Ski cross is a race of four skiers at once down a course of bumps, banked turns and jumps, and it lands in one of the quieter weeks of the season.
The Freeride World Tour Val Thorens Pro runs between 24 and 30 January 2027 on the face of Cime Caron. Riders start at 3,105 m and finish at 2,575 m, over 500 m of vertical at an average of 32 degrees. The competition takes a single day, announced 48 hours ahead depending on the weather, so book the whole week if you want to watch from the foot of the face. At the end of March, Festival’Tho mixes skiing with electro music, and the Grande Dernière closes the season on the first weekend in May.
Les Menuires has its own calendar. Les Trophées de l’Espoir, sponsored by the French sports personality David Douillet, raises money for a cerebral palsy charity every February. Les Menuires du Rire fills March with one-man comedy and magic, and Yogiski brings yoga, meditation and forest bathing in April.
Frequently asked questions
Is Val Thorens good for beginners?
Yes. Four covered magic carpets in the village centre, Castor, Pollux, Musaraigne and Campagnols, are free to use without a lift pass. Once you are confident, the EasyRider pass opens selected gentle green and blue runs. The Soleil area is the closest base to the beginner slopes and the quietest for families.
Do you need a car in Val Thorens?
No. The resort is semi-pedestrian, you can cross it on foot in twenty minutes, and a free bus links the six areas. In winter, drivers must leave their car in one of the resort car parks. By train, Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains station is about an hour away by taxi or by bus, which runs in winter only.
Where should you stay in Val Thorens for après-ski?
Stay in the centre around the Grande Rue, where the shops, restaurants and nightlife are a few steps from the snow front. Groups who want the party on the doorstep often choose a club hotel such as Club Med or MMV, or the UCPA youth hostel.
Can you ski in Val Thorens in summer?
No. Val Thorens has no year-round skiing, unlike some glacier resorts. Lifts follow the winter season dates, from late November to early May, and in summer the resort switches to hiking and mountain biking.
Pick your week first, because the dates decide the crowd and whether a race is on. Then pick the area that matches your group: the centre for a first trip, Soleil for children, Plein Sud for skiing from the door, Les Menuires or Saint-Martin for value or a village. If Val Thorens is one resort on a longer list, our page on ski holidays with theKlub sets the others beside it. Last, compare the rated hotels for your dates on our Val Thorens ski page.
