In short

The best cycling holiday Mallorca offers runs in spring, March to May, or autumn, September to November, with average highs of 20.1 °C in April and 24.0 °C in October and quieter roads than summer. Base in Port de Pollença or Alcúdia for coast and mountains, Port de Sóller for the big climbs, or an inland village for quiet lanes.

On Mallorca the professionals arrive in winter, the gran fondo crowd in April, and everyone else picks a week somewhere around them. The island has 2,071 km of roads and local lanes, says the Consell de Mallorca, the island's government: flat coast in the east, and the Serra de Tramuntana, a range listed by UNESCO, along the north west. Sa Calobra twists up from the sea in 26 hairpins. On a rest day the square in Petra waits with almond cake and café con leche.

Which month is best for a cycling holiday in Mallorca?

March to May and September to November are the best months to ride Mallorca: mild days, and fewer tourists on the roads than in summer. The Consell de Mallorca's cycle touring page recommends October to May, and the Illes Balears tourism board, the regional government's travel site, points cyclists at the quieter months of January to May and September to November. Summer is hot and busy. Winter is cooler, with the odd wet day, and belongs to the pros.

The table below is theKlub's month-by-month climate for Mallorca, built from ten years of Open-Meteo data (2016 to 2025): the average daily high and low, and the days with 1 mm of rain or more.

The weather in Mallorca, month by month: average daily high and low, and days with rain or snow (Open-Meteo, 2016–2025)

October24.0 °C15.3 °C7.7
November18.7 °C11.3 °C8.0
December16.3 °C8.5 °C6.8

Read it the way a rider would. April averages 20.1 °C with lows of 10.8 °C, so pack arm warmers for the early descents. July's average high is 32.8 °C, heat that pushes every ride towards dawn. September is still warm at 28.0 °C but has the most wet days of the year, 9.1 on average, and October settles at 24.0 °C.

Spring suits riders building towards a summer goal, and it is when the Mallorca 312 lands. Autumn suits a group of friends who want long, warm days once the summer crowds thin. January and February suit riders who want quiet roads and the chance to watch WorldTour teams race.

When are the Mallorca 312 and the Challenge Ciclista?

The Mallorca 312 is on Saturday 24 April 2027, and the Challenge Ciclista Mallorca runs over 23 to 31 January 2027. Plan your week around both. The 312 is a gran fondo, a mass ride on roads closed to traffic, starting at 6:30 in Platja de Muro. Riders choose 312, 226 or 167 km and can switch distance on the road. The cut-offs are 5:00 pm for the two shorter loops and 8:40 pm for the full one, according to the Mallorca 312 rules. A helmet is compulsory, and only road bikes with brakes on both wheels may start: no e-bikes, no time trial bikes.

The full loop climbs 5,050 m and crosses the Serra de Tramuntana from Pollença to Andratx, over the Puig Major road, which tops out at 889 m, says Playa de Muro's tourism site. Entry is the catch. All 8,500 places for 2027 went within minutes of opening on 6 October 2026, endurance.biz reports. The official waiting list on the event's website is the way in now. Without a place, plan your rides around that Saturday's closed roads, or line the route and cheer.

The Challenge Ciclista Mallorca is the professional season's opener. Ultima Hora, the Mallorca daily, reports the 2027 dates, confirmed by the organiser, Unisport Consulting, and the International Cycling Union (UCI). The women's race runs 23 to 25 January and the men's 27 to 31 January, with eight one-day trophies between them in towns including Pollença, Port d'Andratx and Calvià. Teams hold training camps on the island in December too, the Consell de Mallorca notes, so a winter week can put you on the same roads as the pros.

Where is the best place to stay in Mallorca for cycling?

The best place to stay in Mallorca for cycling is the north, around Port de Pollença and Alcúdia, the island's most popular bases with cyclists. The two towns sit on the coast at the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana, so one base gives flat rides along the bay and climbs such as the Coll de Femenia and the road out to Cap de Formentor. Alcúdia is the historic town, inside 14th century walls; Port de Pollença is the resort, with the better beach and a promenade. The north's drawback is distance: it is relatively far from the airport, and too far to ride the southern Tramuntana. Port de Sóller suits climbers, sitting at the foot of Puig Major and the Coll de Sóller, for two or three nights. The villages of Selva and Alaró suit riders who want a central base, with mountain climbs one way and the vineyards of Binissalem the other.

That comparison comes from Cycle Fiesta's guide to Mallorca's cycling bases, and theKlub's hotels fall neatly across it. In the north, Forum Boutique Hotel & Spa is in Alcúdia, and Hotel Cala Sant Vicenç is in Pollença; both are adults only. The flat roads between Alcúdia and Artà are the island's gentlest riding, which makes the north the easy pick for a mixed group of friends.

Port de Sóller sits on a small bay with mountains on three sides, a poor base for flat riding and an excellent one for climbing. It also costs more than much of the island. Hotel Esplendido is in Port de Sóller. Expect narrow roads shared with tour buses around Sóller and Deià.

Inland, the villages are quieter. Sa Bisbal in Selva is Placeta Vella in Caimari. Further across the island sit Sa Cabana Hotel & Spa in Consell, Ynaira hotel & Spa in Ariany and Hotel Sa Franquesa Nova in Vilafranca de Bonany. These suit a couple or a small group who would rather ride lanes than promenades.

Palma suits riders who want city evenings after a ride, with a bike lane along the promenade. theKlub's Palma hotels are Portixol Hotel & Restaurant, Palma Riad, Hotel Can Quetglas and Es Princep. For the south west, the Consell's C3 West Coast Hermitages route on the Calvià coast runs 66.5 km with 1,196 m of climbing, graded high. For the climbs themselves, read our guide to the best cycling routes in Mallorca.

Should you bring your own bike or hire one in Mallorca?

Hire if you want to travel light. Bring your own if the week has a goal. Mallorca is set up for renting: more than 120 hotels specialise in cycling, says the Consell de Mallorca. They offer bike hire and repairs, menus for riders and sports massage. The Illes Balears tourism board adds bike parking, workshops, washing areas and transfers of bikes between towns to the list of hotel services.

Renting spares you the bike box at the airport. Check three things when you book: the frame size, pedals that take your cleats, and a compact chainset (50/34, chainrings of 50 and 34 teeth), which makes the long mountain gradients far kinder. Hire suits a group of friends flying in for a long weekend. Riders with a specific bike fit, or a big climbing week such as a 312 build, should bring their own bike.

Draft the group: road rules, quiet roads and the coffee stop

Ride in company, and know the rules that protect you. Spain's traffic authority, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), changed the road rules on 1 October 2026, as its press note on the reform sets out. On roads outside towns a helmet is now compulsory for every cyclist, with the old exemptions gone. A driver overtaking a cyclist there must slow by at least 20 km/h below the limit and leave at least 1.5 m. On a road with more than one lane each way, they must move fully into the next lane.

Picking the roads matters as much. The Consell de Mallorca's Cycling Route Plan rates roads and paths as priority, suitable or not recommended, by safety and traffic. Its 16 signposted routes run to 1,732 km in four areas, linking villages, lighthouses, hermitages and the Tramuntana.

Then comes the part a group remembers. On a rest day the local habit is a gentle coffee roll to the historic square of Petra, where riders gather for almond cake and café con leche. If Mallorca is one island on a longer list, set it beside our guide to 7 cycling routes in Europe for every level. And cycling holidays with theKlub are built for riders who like company on the climbs.

Frequently asked questions

Is there good cycling in Mallorca?

Yes. Mallorca has 2,071 km of roads and local lanes and more than 120 hotels specialised in cycling. Its climbs include Sa Calobra, with 26 hairpins and a 360 degree turn, and Puig Major, the highest point a bike can reach on the island. Professional teams use it as a pre-season base and race the Challenge Ciclista there each January.

Is Mallorca good for beginner cyclists?

Yes, in the right corner of the island. The flat coastal roads between Alcúdia and Artà are the gentlest riding, and central cycling villages such as Petra have quiet roads away from the mountain traffic. Beginners can also ride the bike lanes in the main towns, including Palma's promenade and the Green Trail between Manacor and Artà.

Is Mallorca too hot for cycling in summer?

It can be. Between 2016 and 2025 the average daily high was 32.8 °C in July and 32.3 °C in August, against 20.1 °C in April and 24.0 °C in October. Summer also brings the busiest roads, so spring and autumn are the better weeks to ride, and summer rides are best started early.

What gearing do you need for Mallorca's climbs?

A compact chainset, 50/34, is the sensible choice for the Serra de Tramuntana, whose narrow roads carry sustained steep gradients. Ask for one when you hire a bike, and check the frame size and that the pedals take your cleats. Sa Calobra alone has 26 hairpins.

Mallorca rewards a week planned around its calendar: spring legs for the 312, warm autumn days, or January roads shared with the pros. Choose the month from the climate table, then the base that suits how your group likes to ride. Book that base from our page on cycling in Mallorca.
