In short

The biggest triathlon Mallorca hosts is IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca on Saturday 8 May 2027: a sea swim in the Bay of Alcúdia, a bike leg over the Serra de Tramuntana and a flat run. Come in spring to train for it, when April and May average daily highs of 20 to 24 °C.

The swim starts off the white sand of Playa d'Alcudia, in a bay sheltered from the open sea. At km 35 of the bike you top out on the Coll de la Batalla, 576 m up in the Serra de Tramuntana, and the flat run ends with a finish line on the beach. The same bay, mountains and coast make a spring training block, all within a morning's ride of Alcúdia.

Which triathlons does Mallorca host, and when?

Mallorca's racing runs from March to October, and each race suits a different athlete. These are the dates as each organiser publishes them.

TotalTri Mallorca opens the island's year. Club Triatlon Manacor has run it for more than a decade, always on the coast, and the 2027 edition is in Capdepera on 21 March 2027. It suits anyone who wants an early race to sharpen a spring camp.

IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca is the headline: IRONMAN calls it one of the largest 70.3 races in the world, and general registration for 2027 was already sold out when we checked in October 2026. It suits a middle-distance racer who wants a big field and a crowd on the beach.

The Universal Mallorca Olympic Triathlon reaches its 15th edition in Colònia de Sant Jordi, organised by Best Centre Sports. At 1.5 km, 40 km and 10 km, it is the friendliest step up for a first-timer or a sprint racer.

The Port de Palma Triatlón Mallorca runs in the bay of Palma each September. Club Marathon Mallorca organises it under the technical direction of the Federació de Triatló de les Illes Balears (FETRIB, the islands' triathlon federation), with Olympic, Sprint and Super-Sprint races and relays. It suits short-course racers and anyone who wants a city race with Palma on the doorstep.

Challenge Peguera-Mallorca closes the European season in Peguera, in the municipality of Calvià. It sold out in 2024 and 2025, so treat it like the May race and enter early. Pick it if you want a late target that keeps you training through the summer.

How hard is the IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca course?

The IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca course is a fair test with one long climb: a calm sea swim, 800 m of climbing on the bike and a flat run. The 1.9 km swim stays inside the Bay of Alcúdia, which the organiser describes as well protected from the high seas, and starts and finishes on Playa d'Alcudia. Race-day water was 17 °C in 2024 and 18 °C in 2025 and 2026, so pack a wetsuit you have swum in.

The bike is one 90 km lap. It heads from the bay into the Serra de Tramuntana, over the Coll de Femenia, and reaches its high point on the Coll de la Batalla, 576 m above sea level, at km 35. After that come descents and rolling roads through inland villages back to transition. Strong climbers gain time on the way up; nervous descenders should ride the course before race week. The IRONMAN course page has swim, bike and run maps and GPX files under Downloads, ready to load onto a bike computer. For the island's bigger climbs, Sa Calobra and Formentor among them, read our guide to the best cycling routes in Mallorca.

The race is always on a Saturday, which leaves Sunday to recover on the island. Challenge Peguera rides differently: a two-lap swim off Torà beach, leaving the water between laps, a technical bike course with rolling and hilly sections, and a run its organiser has made flatter along Peguera's seafront promenade and boulevard.

Where do you swim, ride and run on a Mallorca training camp?

Swim in the Bay of Alcúdia or a heated hotel pool, ride the Tramuntana on the roads the Consell de Mallorca, the island's government, rates safest, and run the flat coast around Alcúdia. All three sit within reach of one base.

Swim in the bay, or in a 25 m pool

The Bay of Alcúdia is the obvious open-water swim: it is the race venue and sheltered from the open sea. For structured sets, VIVA Blue & Spa in Playa de Muro has a 25 m pool heated to 25 to 27 °C, with six lanes kept for training. Race-day water in May has been 17 to 18 °C, so the pool earns its place on cold mornings.

Ride the Tramuntana, on the right roads

The Consell counts 2,071 km of roads and lanes, and it rates them in a Cycling Route Plan as priority, suitable or not recommended by safety and traffic. Its 16 signposted routes cover 1,732 km across the island. Use the plan to pick quieter roads for long aerobic rides, and save the Tramuntana for climbing days. The road to Sa Calobra is busy and narrow in peak season, and some descents carry loose gravel.

Running is the easy part to plan. The IRONMAN run is flat, and the coast around Alcúdia gives you the same terrain for brick runs off the bike, the short run straight after a ride that teaches your legs the change. Coastal roads suit easy days; the Tramuntana trails make a recovery walk on a rest day.

When is the best time for a triathlon trip to Mallorca?

The best time for a triathlon trip to Mallorca is April to June or September to October. Spring is the training season: April averages daily highs of 20.1 °C and May 24.2 °C, warm enough for long rides yet cool enough to run at midday, and the two May races, IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca on 8 May 2027 and the Mallorca Olympic on 22 May 2027, give a camp a clear target. The Consell de Mallorca, the island's government, recommends October to May for cycling, and professional teams often hold their camps on the island in December. Summer is hot, with July and August averaging daily highs of 32.8 °C and 32.3 °C. Autumn brings the second window: September and October are still warm, at 28.0 °C and 24.0 °C, and Challenge Peguera-Mallorca closes the season in October. April and May each bring close to 8 days of rain, so keep a pool session up your sleeve.

Pick a base: Alcúdia, Colònia de Sant Jordi or Palma

Pick your base by your race, and use our triathlon in Mallorca page for the stays we rate. For IRONMAN 70.3 or a Tramuntana camp, stay around Alcúdia. VIVA Blue & Spa adds a cycling station with secure storage, a washing area and a mechanic to its training pool. Also in Playa de Muro, Las Gaviotas Suites Hotel & Spa is rated 8.8 out of 10 across 2,205 reviews. Zafiro Tropic keeps a group in Port d'Alcudia, and couples who want an adults-only hotel can pick the Hoposa Pollentia in Pollensa.

For the Mallorca Olympic, Blau Colònia Sant Jordi puts you in the race town. For the Port de Palma race, or a group that wants the old town and the Mercat de l'Olivar on rest days, Hotel Joan Miró Museum in Palma is the base.

Frequently asked questions

Can you still get a place at IRONMAN 70.3 Alcúdia-Mallorca?

General registration for the 8 May 2027 race was sold out when we checked in October 2026. IRONMAN still listed special entries, including its IRONMAN Xclusive Challenge packages, so check the race page for what remains. Challenge Peguera-Mallorca, the same distance in October, is the alternative, though it also sold out in 2024 and 2025.

Is Mallorca a good place for a first triathlon?

Yes, if you pick the right race. The Universal Mallorca Olympic Triathlon in Colònia de Sant Jordi covers 1.5 km, 40 km and 10 km, and the Port de Palma Triatlón Mallorca adds Sprint and Super-Sprint races in September. Both are shorter and gentler than the island's two 70.3 distance races.

Should you bring or hire a bike for triathlon training in Mallorca?

Hire is widely available: the Consell de Mallorca counts more than 120 hotels specialised in cycling, with bike hire and repairs, and the Mallorca Olympic organiser offers wetsuit and bike hire. Check frame size and groupset before you travel. For a race, a specific bike fit or a big climbing week, bring your own bike.

What should triathletes watch out for on Mallorca's roads?

Traffic on the popular climbs, above all the road to Sa Calobra, and narrow roads shared with cars in peak season. Some descents carry loose gravel, and the weather can turn quickly, so pack a rain layer. The Consell de Mallorca's Cycling Route Plan shows which roads it rates safest for riders.
